Title: Teaching mathematics for social justice
Presenter: Pete Wright
Date: Saturday 4th February 2017
Time: 10:00 to 12:30
Summary: How can learning mathematics help bring about a fairer society? How might a focus on equity effect the way we teach mathematics? What would an engaging, meaningful and empowering mathematics curriculum look like? What is mathematics and why do we spend so much time learning it?
This workshop will provide an opportunity to engage with some of the ideas and activities generated by the 'Teaching Mathematics for Social Justice' action research project (involving a group of five teachers in London schools). These will be used to promote discussion around the four questions above. Further information about the TMSJ project can be found at http://maths-socialjustice.weebly.com/
Venue: University College London, Institute of Education (UCL/IOE) Room 804, Bedford Way, London WC1H 0AL. Directions: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/ioe/contact-us
Important Notes: You can come straight up to the room. There will be no refreshments as we don't have the facilities to do this yet. However, the IOE has its own coffee shop and there are lots of possibilities nearby.
As last year, the subscription is £10 for individuals and £20 for a whole department. Remember this is for the whole year including the conference! There is an entrance fee for those in work (£5) and for GTP/PGCE students (£2).
